Adekambi revealed that the FIRS plans to initiate discussions with these entertainers, urging them to voluntarily comply with tax payment. In the event of non-compliance, enforcement measures will be implemented. According to him, skit makers, influencers, and other content creators generating income through digital platforms are subject to Nigerian law, which mandates everyone earning an income to pay taxes. Acknowledging the challenge of tracking these individuals, Adekambi mentioned ongoing efforts to address this issue.

The FIRS aims to collaborate with the Corporate Affairs Commission’s Registrar-General and the FIRS chairman to integrate these digital content creators into the tax system. Adekambi underscored the importance of meeting with content creators to encourage voluntary tax payments. However, if a cooperative stance is not reciprocated, the FIRS will resort to enforcement actions.

Adekambi emphasized that content creators and influencers in developed countries already contribute to tax revenues. Drawing parallels with social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which pay taxes to the government, he argued that individuals utilizing these platforms for income generation should similarly fulfill their tax obligations to the government. He highlighted the FIRS chairman’s commitment to leveraging technology and data for effective monitoring, emphasizing that enhanced revenue predictability would facilitate government planning.
