Innovative Naira Spraying: Musicians Lead The Way With Creative Methods

In response to heightened scrutiny from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) targeting Naira abuse, Nigerians are pioneering innovative methods to uphold the tradition of spraying money at social gatherings.

The severity of these crimes came to the forefront following the EFCC’s actions against prominent figures like Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, who received a six-month prison sentence for Naira abuse. Actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin also faced legal repercussions, serving a similar sentence for defacing Naira notes at a Lagos event.

Following these high-profile cases, socialite Pascal Okechukwu, also known as Cubana Chief Priest, was granted a N10 million bail after pleading not guilty to similar charges.

In light of these developments, The Punch Online has compiled a list of nine actions involving the Naira that could result in legal consequences, including spraying, writing, tearing, stapling, dancing, or stamping on the currency, as well as selling, mutilating, rejecting, or creating money bouquets.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Clean Notes Policy aims to maintain the quality and durability of banknotes in circulation. However, partygoers and musicians have devised new methods to continue the tradition of Naira spraying while avoiding legal repercussions.

Among these innovations, musicians have introduced money boxes as a substitute for direct cash spraying, allowing attendees to drop cash in honor of celebrants or to appreciate musical performances. Additionally, guests now use bank transfers and money vouchers to contribute funds to events discreetly, ensuring compliance with legal standards.

Some musicians, including Wasiu Alabi (Pasuma), Saheed Osupa, and Adewale Ayuba, have voiced support for the EFCC’s efforts to curb Naira abuse, emphasizing the importance of respecting the country’s currency.

These developments reflect a cultural shift in the approach to celebrating events while adhering to legal guidelines regarding currency handling. As Nigerians adapt to these changes, the tradition of Naira spraying continues to evolve, demonstrating resilience in the face of regulatory challenges.
