Inside the Leak: Army Opens Probe Into Exposed DSS Intelligence Warning On Planned Attacks

The Nigerian Army has launched an internal investigation into the unauthorised circulation of a classified Department of State Services (DSS) intelligence report warning of planned attacks by suspected Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of Adamawa and Borno states.

According to The Punch, senior military officers at the 232 Battalion in Yola, Adamawa State, have commenced efforts to identify the individual responsible for leaking the confidential document.

The intelligence report was reportedly forwarded by the DSS to the military to enable security agencies take proactive measures against the suspected attacks.

A security source familiar with the development disclosed that the document had been officially received and registered at the battalion before it was photographed and shared outside authorised channels.

“If you look at the document, it had already been logged into the registry of the 232 Battalion. After that, someone took a photograph of it and circulated it for reasons known only to that individual,” the source said on condition of anonymity.

The source added that the leak triggered anxiety among residents of communities mentioned in the intelligence report.

“The purpose of the alert was to quietly put the military on notice so they could prevent the attacks. Unfortunately, the report found its way into the public, causing unnecessary panic,” the source explained.

Army Intensifies Probe

Another military officer confirmed that an investigation was underway, describing the incident as a serious security breach with potential implications for national security.

According to the officer, the military is determined to identify those responsible for the leak and hold them accountable.

“There is nothing that will stop us from uncovering those behind the leaked DSS document. We must expose the bad eggs within the system because national security cannot be sacrificed for personal interests,” the officer said.

Intelligence Warned of Planned Attacks

The leaked intelligence report, dated July 27, 2026, was addressed to the Commander of the 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola.

According to the document, the DSS warned that suspected Boko Haram fighters were planning coordinated attacks on communities in Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State following the reported collapse of a ceasefire arrangement.

The report further alleged that the insurgents intended to kidnap senior government officials, councillors, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other residents in the affected communities.

Among those reportedly identified as potential targets were the district head of Michika and his son.

The intelligence agency also claimed that surveillance teams had already been deployed by the suspected insurgents to monitor movements and gather information ahead of the planned operations.

To counter the threat, the DSS advised the Nigerian Army to strengthen collaboration with forest guards and local hunters to enhance security in vulnerable communities and prevent the suspected attacks from being carried out.
