Inspector Usman, along with Omotola Adeboyejo and Wasiu Agbaraojo, faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder. The officer has been dismissed from the police force and is now facing court proceedings, according to a DPP advisory addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2 Command Headquarters.

The indictment, signed by DPP Deputy Director Sunmonu Tunde, follows the tragic shooting of Chief Jubril on July 15, 2023, which occurred in the presence of his wife and daughter during a land dispute. Eyewitnesses reported that the chief was shot by a group of armed men, including two Mobile Police officers.

The deceased’s widow, Ejiro Jubril, recounted her distressing experience, stating she was assaulted while trying to protect her husband from the attackers. Her account, along with that of the deceased’s elder brother Moshood, has been corroborated by the medical certificate and eyewitness testimonies.

The DPP’s advisory highlighted that despite conflicting witness statements, forensic analysis linked the fatal gunshots to Inspector Usman’s rifle. The ballistic report indicated that while both Mobile Policemen present at the scene fired shots, only Usman’s weapon was definitively tied to the fatal injuries.

The spokesperson for Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Ayuba Umma, clarified that while Inspector Sanni, the other Mobile Policeman present, was not charged, he was demoted. Umma explained that the demotion was due to internal disciplinary measures, as Sanni was not directly implicated in the shooting.

The case underscores ongoing concerns about police conduct and accountability in Nigeria.
