She expressed concern over the significant controversy surrounding a project of national interest like the Dangote Refinery, which has attracted attention both locally and internationally among investors.
Ezekwesili pointed out, “Did the Nigerian government not disclose borrowing $3.3 billion from AFREXIM Bank to acquire a stake in the Dangote refinery?”
Reflecting on her past engagements with NNPCL leadership during her tenure, Ezekwesili emphasized the need to address the culture of opacity within NNPC. She called for President Tinubu to direct the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) to commence an independent audit of transactions involving Dangote Refinery and NNPCL.
“The opacity of NNPC prompted the establishment of the Multi-Stakeholders Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, which I initiated as Chairperson in the early 2000s,” Ezekwesili noted. She underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in the oil and minerals sector, urging NEITI to play a pivotal role in ensuring public disclosure of the true status of affairs.
“The Nigerian President has a responsibility to utilize NEITI to immediately initiate an Independent Audit of Dangote Refinery-NNPC transactions to provide the public with accurate information,” she concluded.
