The moment took place during the inauguration of the Gateway Cargo International Airport in Iperu, Ogun State, over the weekend.
Obasanjo and President Bola Tinubu have long been known as political rivals, with Obasanjo frequently criticising Tinubu’s administration since he assumed office. In his book Nigeria: Past and Future, released alongside another publication to mark his 88th birthday in March 2025, Obasanjo described Tinubu’s government as “competing with the late President Buhari’s administration in inefficiency.”
Footage from the event showed Tinubu respectfully greeting Obasanjo and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba as they welcomed him alongside other dignitaries.
During his speech, Tinubu commended Obasanjo for his dedication to good governance, while Obasanjo expressed appreciation for the president’s invitation to the event.
He said: “When the governor gave me your time of arrival, it was free for me. But then he said, ‘You will make a speech.’ I asked, ‘In what capacity?’ He replied, ‘as a citizen of Ogun State.’ I could not dispute that,” noting his role in welcoming Tinubu.
Obasanjo’s outfit quickly became a topic of discussion, with many suggesting it may signal a subtle political message or an attempt to ease tensions between the two leaders.
When contacted, Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, declined to comment on the significance of the attire. However, a source close to the former president claimed the outfit was presented to him at the event.
According to the source, the Tinubu-branded agbada was handed to Obasanjo upon arrival, describing the situation as “a kind of conspiracy.” The source added that, as an elder statesman, Obasanjo accepted the gesture rather than refuse it.
