Prof. Oloyede made this statement during the Academic and Research Excellence Award presentation to Yusuf Olaolu Ali (SAN) at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State. Oloyede, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, underscored the role of universities in fostering excellence and celebrating academic success.

He highlighted the significance of adhering to the correct age limits for university admissions, noting that this year’s minimum age requirement is 16, not 18. Oloyede criticized the practice of circumventing these requirements and urged both parents and institutions to address the underlying causes of such behaviors.

Oloyede emphasized that students should follow the educational timeline appropriate for their development. “Primary school begins at age 6, and a child should complete 12 years of education before entering university. This is not a new policy, and this year the minimum age is set at 16, as agreed by the honorable minister. We must ensure that anomalies do not become the norm,” he said.

He questioned the logic behind pushing students into university before they are developmentally ready and pointed out that some universities, like the University of Lagos (UNILAG), have long adhered to the policy of not admitting students younger than 16. He believes this practice should be adopted more broadly across the country.
