Jega Calls For Accountability: INEC’s IReV Failure Raises Concerns

During the February 2023 presidential and National Assembly polls, concerns arose when INEC officials at polling units were unable to electronically upload election results to the IReV, as mandated by Section 60 of the Electoral Act 2022. Opposition parties protested the manual collation of results and the declaration of winners, leading to legal challenges against the victory of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Jega acknowledged INEC’s efforts to address the glitches that impeded real-time result transmission but emphasized the need for a comprehensive explanation from the electoral body. He asserted that while INEC introduced technology to enhance transparency and integrity in the election process, some politicians strategically bypassed and disrupted the IReV and BVAS systems.
Reflecting on his tenure at INEC from 2011 to 2015, Jega highlighted the recurring pattern where politicians sought to outmaneuver the electoral commission by staying one step ahead of technological advancements. He called for a thorough public inquiry into the IReV failure and expressed concern that despite INEC’s confidence in the system, it ultimately faltered.
