Jigawa: Man Jailed 10 Years After Conviction For Def!ling 11-Year-Old Girl

The Jigawa State High Court sitting in Ringim has sentenced a 50-year-old man, Abubakar Biniya, to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of raping an 11-year-old girl.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Justice Muhammad El-Usman, who presided over High Court No. 11, also ordered Biniya to pay ₦500,000 in compensation to the victim.

Biniya, a resident of Galadanchi Quarters in Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, was convicted over the offence, which the court heard occurred in January 2024.

During the trial, the prosecution, led by the Jigawa State Ministry of Justice, called six witnesses and presented five exhibits, including a medical report, in support of its case. Biniya testified in his own defence but did not present any additional witness.

In delivering judgment on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Justice El-Usman said the court considered the convict’s plea for leniency as well as the fact that he was a first-time offender before determining the sentence.

The court further ordered that Biniya’s name be entered in the Jigawa State Sexual Offenders Register maintained by the Ministry of Justice.

Justice El-Usman also directed that the conviction be publicised through radio and television stations in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, 2021.

The court granted the parties three months within which to appeal the judgment.
