Job Opportunities Set For 50,000 IDPs

On World Humanitarian Day, state officials revealed that Benue is currently hosting 9,318 Cameroonian refugees from the Anglophone regions. During a recent visit to BIPC’s water and bread factories in Makurdi, Dr. Asemakaha discussed the planned employment initiatives with the UNHCR delegation, including Assistant High Commissioner for Operations Mr. Raouf Mazou and German Ambassador Annett Günther.

The proposed initiatives are expected to benefit around 80,000 families and include a variety of business ventures such as expanding the bakery, water factory, and agro-commodities hub. Asemakaha presented a Proof of Concept to the UNHCR, detailing plans for providing sustainable livelihoods, skills training, and micro-employment opportunities to vulnerable populations.

Additional planned developments include a normal saline factory, a food basket beer factory, and other businesses, aiming to address unemployment among displaced persons. The innovative schemes, including motorcycle hire purchase and CNG kit installation, are projected to create over 50,000 direct jobs.

Mr. Mazou praised the BIPC’s efforts and expressed the UNHCR’s commitment to supporting these initiatives through Public-Private Partnerships. He highlighted the model as an example of how the private sector can positively impact the lives of IDPs and refugees.

Beneficiaries, including Cameroonian refugees like Comfort Oya, Blessing Anyiman, and Nicholas Ukeyima, have already expressed their gratitude for the skills gained through BIPC’s programs.
