The Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has threatened to resume a nationwide strike if the Federal Government fails to implement agreed salary adjustments by April.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The warning comes after the union suspended its industrial action, which began on November 15, 2025, following a decision by its national leadership on February 6 to halt the strike.

Speaking to NAN on Tuesday in Calabar, JOHESU’s Cross River Chapter Chairman, Bassey Icha, said members returned to work after holding congresses in their respective units and branches.

Icha explained that the strike was primarily driven by the government’s failure to revise the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), which has remained unchanged since its introduction in 2009.

He noted that doctors under the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) have received multiple salary reviews, widening the pay gap within the health sector.

“JOHESU is not demanding parity with doctors’ salaries but is seeking a fair review based on government salary templates,” Icha said.

He further highlighted that several memoranda of understanding signed with the government since 2014 remain unimplemented, including a 2021 memo submitted to the Budget Office that has yet to be processed by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

According to him, the union agreed to suspend the strike after the government requested time, with committee approval expected by April.

“Failure to achieve positive outcomes by the end of April will compel JOHESU to resume industrial action,” he warned.

Icha also pointed out that research shows Nigerian health workers are paid less than their counterparts in many West African countries, including Ghana, and called on the government to prioritise training, modern equipment, and improved working conditions to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.
