Jonathan, who lost the election to his successor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, made the revelation while speaking at the YIAGA Africa Reflection Conference on Democratic Elections in West Africa in Abuja on Tuesday. At the time, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was headed by Prof. Attahiru Jega.

Jonathan shared that the card reader malfunction almost led to significant unrest in Nigeria, emphasizing the pivotal role of electoral bodies and the police in ensuring the integrity of elections.

The conference, titled “Strengthening Democratic Processes in West Africa: Lessons from the 2024 Elections and Prospects for Future Elections,” was supported by the European Commission, ECOWAS, and GIZ.

The former President remarked: “The success or failure of an election depends largely on two critical agencies—the electoral management body and the police. The stability of democracy is closely tied to how elections are managed and policed. If security personnel are not fair and just, the credibility of the election process and the legitimacy of governance could be compromised.”

On the issue with the card reader, Jonathan added, “When Jega was in charge, he introduced the card reader, but during the election, the card reader rejected me, my wife, and my mother. This almost led to chaos in the country.”
