Jonathan Under Pressure: Ijaw Youths Expose Alleged Plot To Lure Ex-President Into Race
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has cautioned former President Goodluck Jonathan to tread carefully regarding calls for him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview with Punch, IYC President Jonathan Lokpobiri expressed skepticism about Jonathan’s chances, despite acknowledging the former leader’s respected global image.
Lokpobiri explained:
“This is ultimately a personal decision. If he chooses to run, of course, we will rally behind our own. But realistically, what chances does he have? Nigerian politics, especially the northern bias that undermined him even when he was President, could make such a bid unwise. With another Southern Presidency already in play, running again might only be a trap.”
He further stressed that Jonathan’s international reputation and legacy should take precedence over a political comeback, adding that even the former president’s wife is reportedly opposed to the idea.
Offering advice, Lokpobiri said:
“If it is truly his destiny, we cannot stand in the way. But I strongly advise against it. At this point, uniting behind the current Southern Presidency is more important. Jonathan has the wisdom and experience to make that decision himself, but I doubt he will run. If he does, we will stand with him—but I do not believe he will.”
