The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized what it calls a covert attempt by the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee (LP-NCC) to overturn a Supreme Court ruling that settled the party’s leadership dispute.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement on Monday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, disclosed that they uncovered the alleged plot through newly surfaced court documents.

According to Ifoh, the Usman-led group—allegedly backed by Abia State Governor Alex Otti—sought to use a proxy, Sule Garba, to initiate fresh legal action at a Federal High Court in Gusau, Zamfara State, aiming to unseat Abure from his position.

“We are deeply concerned that certain individuals within our party continue to shop for court orders across the country just to prolong the leadership crisis and undermine INEC’s recognition of our leadership,” Ifoh stated.

Describing the move as an act of desperation, Ifoh revealed that the Usman faction traveled overnight from Abuja to Zamfara to secure a favorable court order, which the court ultimately rejected. “This isn’t the first time. They made a similar attempt in Aba last year and were also denied,” he added.

He expressed frustration over the persistent internal wrangling, warning that such distractions are harming the party’s progress while rival political parties focus on their future strategies. “It baffles me that some leaders in this country would rather sink the entire ship than admit defeat. It’s beyond reason,” Ifoh said.

He emphasized that the Supreme Court, in its April 4, 2025 judgment, ruled that issues of party leadership fall under internal party affairs and are not subject to judicial review. “There is no Supreme Court ruling that removed Abure as the party’s National Chairman or named Nenadi Usman as a replacement,” he stressed.

Ifoh also cited INEC’s position, which declared the stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia that installed Usman as chairperson as illegal.

In the latest development, Sule Garba, acting on behalf of the Usman faction, reportedly filed a motion (Suit No FHC/GS/CS/30/2025) at the Federal High Court in Gusau, seeking an ex parte order to bar Abure and National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim from continuing to serve in their positions. However, on May 15, 2025, Justice Salim Olasupo Ibrahim declined the request, ruling that all parties—including Abure, Ibrahim, the Labour Party, and INEC—must first be served notice. The case has been adjourned to June 4, 2025.
