The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged political leaders to reaffirm their commitment to democratic principles.

Posting on his verified X handle on Wednesday, June 13, Obi emphasized that true democracy entails fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the constitution.

He stated, “As our nation observes Democracy Day today, marking 25 years of striving to uphold democratic values, the critical question remains: Are we genuinely democratic?”

Obi continued, “In building a New Nigeria, these tenets should form the foundation of our democracy. It is achievable.”

The Labour Party leader expressed concern over several ratings that indicate the nation is not truly democratic.

“To further illustrate our lack of true democracy, consider the following rankings:

• Our democracy index score of 4.23 places us low on the Global Democracy Index.
• On the Corruption Perception Index, we rank 145th out of 180 countries, reflecting high corruption levels in Nigeria.
• In the World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index, we are 120th out of 142 countries, showing a significant disregard for the rule of law.
• The 2024 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) lists Nigeria as one of West Africa’s most dangerous and challenging countries for journalists, ranking us 112th out of 180 countries.
• On the Global Hunger Index, we rank 109th out of 125 countries.”
