The Lagos State Police Command had detained the protesters following the demonstration, but they regained their freedom on Friday. Those released include Funmi Robert (60), Sunday Obasoro (24), Sikiru Adeagbo (41), Babatunde Oyeleye (32), Akin Okunowo (50), Dare Toyin (21), Adebayo Shobogun (37), Michael Adeleke (23), and Stanley Akonye (42).

Nwapa emphasized the right to protest in his statement: “Protesters arrested and detained by the Lagos @PoliceNG have been released after comrades intervened. The police must respect that protest is a right guaranteed by law. We demand an end to the repression of dissenting voices.”

Earlier, the YRC had called for the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested protesters, who were taken into custody at Gani Fawehinmi Park, Ojota, on October 2, 2024.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olanrewaju Ishola, justified the arrests as a proactive measure to maintain public order, claiming the actions of the individuals were provocative and intended to cause unrest. The police insisted those detained were not protesters.

Additionally, the #EndBadGovernance Movement released a statement condemning the arrests, revealing that a Toyota vehicle with registration number SRA 813 XB was also seized during the operation. The movement demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the arrested individuals.

The #FearlessInOctober demonstrations, which began on Tuesday, were aimed at protesting against the rising cost of living, economic challenges, and unfavorable policies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a related incident, five peaceful protesters were arrested in Jos, Plateau State, earlier in the week, though they were later released. The five individuals were identified as Yakubu Idris, Umar Faruq Dandina, Nura Abubakar, Khalid Sulaiman, and Umar Faruk.
