A tragic incident unfolded on Azikoro Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, resulting in the untimely death of Benalayefa Bako Asiayei, allegedly at the hands of a Nigeria Police Force officer……….CONTINUE READING
According to reports, Asiayei, a 40-year-old father of three and an electrician who utilized his vehicle for commercial purposes, was fatally shot after purportedly refusing to offer a ₦200 bribe to the police officer.
This distressing event has elicited widespread outrage from the public and various human rights organizations. The identity of the officer involved, reportedly a member of the state’s Operation Doo Akpo special patrol team, remains undisclosed at present.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the police patrol team intercepted Asiayei’s vehicle, demanding a bribe which he couldn’t immediately provide. Despite his attempts to explain his situation, the situation escalated, leading to the fatal shooting.
Asiayei was discovered by a relative, lying in a pool of blood at the scene, while the police vehicle allegedly fled the area. His body was subsequently transported to the Government House in Yenagoa and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre Mortuary.
When reached for comment, the police spokesman in Bayelsa State, ASP Musa Muhammed, indicated that a statement on the matter would be forthcoming later on Thursday
