Ibrahim Shekarau, former governor of Kano State, has denied any involvement in manipulating local government allocations during his tenure. Shekarau emphasized that he never solicited kickbacks from contractors throughout his two terms as governor. “When I ran for office, I had less than N100,000 in my account, and my entry into politics was driven by persuasion rather than personal ambition,” he said.
He challenged any contractor who worked with him over the past 44 years to come forward if they had ever been asked for a percentage or money. Shekarau also noted that none of his commissioners ever provided him with money as a contractor’s fee, and no local government chairman during his administration gave him any money. “I never interfered with their allocations,” he asserted.
This denial comes in the wake of a 2018 video released by Daily Nigeria, which allegedly showed Shekarau and APC National Chairman Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje receiving bribes from contractors. The Kano State Government subsequently filed charges against Ganduje for allegedly accepting $200,000 in kickbacks.
In addition to addressing these allegations, Shekarau, who is also the chairman of MSSN’s organizing committee, announced that the association will introduce new programs to promote unity and encourage political participation among its members.
