Kano Tension Rises: Yusuf, Ganduje’s Secret Talks Fuel Emirship Drama

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, and his predecessor, Abdullahi Ganduje, have reportedly held a private meeting in Abuja to address rising political tensions in the state.

According to sources, the closed-door discussion focused on recent defections, the ongoing emirship dispute, and the vacant deputy governorship position, amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Prior to the meeting, Ganduje was said to have met with Bola Ahmed Tinubu to brief him on developments in Kano, including the defection of former APC governorship candidate, Nasiru Gawuna, and concerns about further defections.

Sources indicated that Ganduje expressed dissatisfaction over what he described as inadequate consultation by the presidency on party matters in the state, which he linked to the ongoing internal crisis.

During the discussions, Tinubu reportedly suggested a ministerial appointment for Gawuna, but Ganduje noted that the move came too late, as Gawuna had already defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The long-standing Kano emirship dispute was also a key issue, with Ganduje reportedly supporting the claim of Aminu Bayero and urging a swift resolution to prevent further political complications ahead of the elections.

The crisis, which involves rival claims between Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II, continues to shape the political landscape in the state.

Another major topic was the vacant deputy governorship position, with Ganduje reportedly recommending Murtala Garo for the role as part of efforts to stabilise the party and curb defections.

Following his meeting with Ganduje, the president reportedly directed that both leaders meet to find common ground on the issues.

Sources said Governor Yusuf later visited Ganduje’s residence in Abuja in the early hours of Wednesday, accompanied by his son and political associates, where discussions continued with other stakeholders.

The talks reportedly centred on addressing defections and resolving the emirship dispute, with Ganduje again advising the appointment of Garo as deputy governor to strengthen party unity.

However, Governor Yusuf was said to have requested more time to consult widely before making a final decision.
