Chaired by Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State and hosted by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna, the forum focused on critical challenges such as insecurity, poverty, and the high number of out-of-school children.

Key Resolutions from the Meeting

1.Rejection of the Tax Reform Bill: The governors voiced strong opposition to the proposed Tax Reform Bill before the National Assembly, specifically rejecting the shift to a derivation-based model for Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution. They argued that this model would disadvantage northern states, as the current system bases distribution on company headquarters rather than actual consumption. Governor Yahaya emphasized the need for the National Assembly to oppose any bill that could harm the welfare of their constituents.

2.Support for Flood Victims: The NSGF expressed condolences to those affected by recent flooding in Maiduguri and other northern areas. The governors committed to collaborating with the federal government to provide relief and support reconstruction efforts in impacted communities.

3.Empowering Traditional Institutions: Acknowledging the role of traditional leaders, the forum called for enhanced cooperation between these institutions and security agencies to address issues like kidnapping and banditry.

4.Security Commitment: The governors thanked the federal government and security forces for their efforts in combating crime, particularly commending the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff, General C.J. Musa. They stressed the need to continue and build upon these security gains.

5.Youth Empowerment Initiatives: In response to recent youth-led protests, the forum resolved to increase investments in education, skills training, and job creation to help steer young people away from crime and social unrest.

6.Energy Resilience: Addressing the electricity challenges caused by vandalized infrastructure, the NSGF urged federal action to restore power and improve the region’s energy security through new transmission lines.

7.Agricultural Development: Recognizing the north’s agricultural potential, the governors pledged to support farmers with improved financing and infrastructure and advocated for the revival of the textile industry and agro-allied sectors.

8.Livestock Development Commitment: The forum supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s livestock reform initiatives and pledged to work with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee.

9.Climate Change and Flood Mitigation: In light of recent flooding, the governors highlighted the need for investments in irrigation infrastructure to manage excess water, protect rural livelihoods, and enhance food security.

10.Educational Initiatives: The NSGF reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the number of out-of-school children and improving educational outcomes across northern Nigeria.

The NSGF reiterated its dedication to fostering national unity and development, emphasizing the importance of equitable policy implementation to ensure all regions feel included.
