Oluyede’s appointment followed the death of Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, which left the position of Chief of Army Staff vacant. During his address, Oluyede highlighted the importance of collaboration with Nigeria’s neighboring countries to combat insecurity and create safer environments for citizens.
“I am honored to be considered for this position and look forward to contributing my utmost best to bring lasting peace to every corner of our dear country,” Oluyede said. “I appear before you today to be confirmed as the 24th Chief of Army Staff, following the unfortunate passing of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, our 23rd COAS, after a brief illness.”
He continued, “Although I was appointed by President Bola Tinubu to act as COAS following General Lagbaja’s illness, the president, in his wisdom, has now deemed me worthy to fully assume the role after General Lagbaja’s passing and state funeral on November 15, 2024. I am grateful for this opportunity.”
Oluyede, who has served in the Nigerian Army for over 30 years, detailed his extensive experience at various levels of military service, from junior to senior ranks, and his involvement in the army’s operations and management over the past five years. He acknowledged both the successes and challenges faced by the army in recent years but expressed confidence that, if confirmed, he would bring positive changes and strengthen the Nigerian Army to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.
“Given the trust placed in me by the president, the National Assembly, and the Nigerian people, I pledge to do my best to justify this confidence and lead the Nigerian Army to greater success,” Oluyede stated.
To address Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges, Oluyede emphasized the need for advanced equipment, including aircraft, to enhance the army’s operational capabilities.
The Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, noted that Nigeria has the resources and potential to overcome its security challenges but emphasized the need for innovative and adaptive strategies. “Security threats are no longer confined to traditional battlefields; they now extend to cyberspace, the economy, and even the socio-political landscape. Our military must be equipped and trained to handle both conventional and emerging threats,” he said.
Benson assured Oluyede that the House would continue to provide the necessary legal frameworks and funding to strengthen the armed forces. He also stressed the importance of professionalism and synergy among security agencies, emphasizing that Oluyede’s leadership would be critical in ensuring the welfare of troops and maintaining public trust.
“If confirmed, you will be expected to prioritize the welfare of our troops, foster collaboration among security agencies, and uphold the trust of the Nigerian people,” Benson said. “This committee will ask questions that reflect the concerns of our citizens and the nation as a whole.
