During a plenary session, Daku expressed his sorrow over the ongoing violence affecting his constituency, moving a motion of urgent public importance. He noted the recent surge in brutality, lamenting that Bassa, once a harmonious community, has been marred by violence since an inter-tribal crisis erupted in 2016.
“Former Governor Alhaji Yahaya Bello worked diligently to restore peace to Bassa, a tranquility that continued under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. Unfortunately, that peace has been shattered, with unknown gunmen taking innocent lives,” Daku said.
He recounted a horrific incident from two months ago, where a local resident was killed on his farm by unidentified assailants. “Just last week, on October 23, residents of Sheria town woke up to the devastating news of three respected community members murdered by yet-to-be-identified gunmen. A day later, two more individuals in Sheria were killed,” he added.
Daku called on the Kogi State Government to enhance security measures in Bassa and to take decisive action against the perpetrators. He urged, “The government must instruct security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure that those behind these attacks are brought to justice.”
Abu Onoru-Oiza Jibrin, representing Ajaokuta State Constituency, also condemned the recurring violence, highlighting that farmers are often the primary targets. “These attacks show a complete disregard for human life. I’ve seen distressing images of victims who were brutally beheaded and mutilated. This crisis demands immediate intervention to protect our citizens,” he stated.
Major Enefola, from Igalamela State Constituency, suggested removing certain security officers stationed in Bassa, alleging their complicity in the ongoing violence.
In response, Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Aliyu Yusuf, directed the House Committee on Security to investigate thoroughly and enlist local vigilantes to help identify the root causes of the violence. He urged security agencies to capture and prosecute those responsible, ensuring they face the full force of the law.
