Kogi Senator Natasha Throws Support Behind EFCC’s Investigation Into N80.2bn Fraud Allegations Against Yahaya Bello
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has expressed her approval of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) endeavors to apprehend and bring to justice the former governors of Kogi State, particularly Alhaji Yahaya Bello, concerning an alleged N80.2 billion misappropriation of funds.
In addition to her commendation of the EFCC’s actions, Senator Natasha also praised the chairman of the commission, Ola Olukoyede, for his decision to transfer ownership of 14 properties, initially forfeited to the federal government, to the government and people of Enugu State.
Responding to Bello’s cited reason for declining the EFCC’s summons, the senator underscored the necessity for the commission to probe other individuals involved in corruption. This, she stressed, was crucial to prevent any perception that the investigation of the former governor was motivated by personal vendetta.
A circulated video featured the EFCC chairman recounting Bello’s purported explanation for not attending interrogations, alleging that a female senator had orchestrated the presence of numerous journalists to discredit him whenever he visited the EFCC office in Abuja.
Expressing her views through a statement from her Chief Press Secretary, Arogbonlo Israel, issued in Abuja, Senator Natasha reminded Yahaya Bello of the significance of adhering to Nigeria’s laws and constitution, especially considering his past role as Kogi’s chief security officer.
“I found it disconcerting that Yahaya Bello chose to evade the EFCC’s summons, given his prior position as Kogi’s chief security officer. As a former governor, he should grasp the importance of upholding Nigeria’s laws and constitution,” remarked Senator Natasha.
She further emphasized the principle that “he who comes into equity must come with clean hands” and advised Bello to accept the invitation and clear his name while the opportunity still presented itself.
Acknowledging the EFCC’s diligence in handling the case, Senator Natasha reiterated the imperative that no individual should be exempt from the law’s reach. She asserted that the EFCC must pursue the case to its conclusion to instill confidence among both Nigerians and the international community in the anti-corruption campaign.
