Governor Ahmed Ododo’s letter, citing financial constraints and high wage bills, prompted this extension and the postponement of Local Government elections in the state. Speaker of the House Umar Yusuf, who read the letter, emphasized the need for effective representation by the chairmen during this extended period.

Originally set to conclude on July 8, 2024, the tenure of the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen will now end on January 8, 2025, following the anticipated completion of the local government elections.

In a related development, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged former Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State, whose tenures have expired, to peacefully acknowledge the end of their terms as per the state law. The party cautioned against actions that could disturb the state’s peace and called for continued cooperation among residents for stability and democratic progress.
