The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) has announced the timetable for the upcoming local government elections, slated for September 21, 2024. According to a statement by KWASIEC Chairman Alhaji Mohammed Okanla, the electoral process will kick off on June 21, 2024 with a meeting involving the leadership of registered political parties. Primary elections for political parties are scheduled to take place from June 24 to June 30, 2024, followed by the submission of nomination forms (KWSIEC 01 and KWSIEC 02) between July 1 and July 5, 2024. Verification of candidates’ credentials will occur from July 8 to July 19, 2024.
Further activities include the display of nominated candidates’ names on the KWASIEC notice board from July 22 to July 26, 2024, and training of ad-hoc staff across the three senatorial districts from July 27 to July 31, 2024. Political parties have until August 5, 2024 to withdraw candidates if necessary, and the final list of nominated candidates will be published on August 6, 2024.
Campaigning will commence on August 19, 2024 and conclude at midnight on September 19, 2024. The election day for both chairmanship and councillorship positions is set for September 21, 2024. Winners of the elections can collect their certificates of return from the KWASIEC office on September 23, 2024.
