During a labor union-organized protest in Owerri, Imo State, Ajaero was arrested by Nigerian Police officers, who were responding to allegations of workers’ rights abuses and violations by the state government.
NLC claimed that Ajaero was violently mistreated by security personnel linked to Governor Hope Uzodimma. The Imo Police command, on the other hand, denied the allegations, asserting that he was taken into protective custody instead of being arrested.
In the aftermath of the alleged assault, organized labor demanded an investigation and the reassignment of the Commissioner of Police in Imo, the removal of the Area Commander of the Police, all officers and personnel in Owerri through whom the Police Commissioner supervised the attack, and the immediate arrest and prosecution of Nwaneri Chinasa, an aide to the governor.
It has been revealed that the National Executive Council (NEC) of organized labor organizations will meet in Abuja to finalize the proposed nationwide strike.
A leader of the NLC, speaking to Daily Sun, confirmed that the strike will proceed as planned, subject to the directive of the NEC.
The source emphasized that only the implementation of their demands could prevent the country from coming to a standstill. “We are all going to Abuja on Tuesday for the meeting. All the affiliates have fully mobilized for the action. We are all just waiting for the directives from the center.”
The union official pointed out that NLC and TUC were united in their struggle, and the TUC had also scheduled its NEC meeting for the following day.
He mentioned that certain recent events have exacerbated the situation and further emphasize the need for a nationwide shutdown.
Moreover, the NLC alleged that Ajaero’s hometown of Azalla Owalla in Emekuku, Owerri, Imo State was invaded and attacked.
The NLC’s statement, delivered by Head of Media and Information Benson Upah, suggested that the latest attack on Ajaero’s community on Saturday may have been an assassination plot targeting the Congress boss.
