Okupe, in response to the controversy, reaffirmed his commitment to a politics devoid of bitterness. He dismissed rumors of receiving financial benefits from the All Progressives Congress (APC) after supporting Peter Obi of the Labour Party in the past presidential election.
He emphasized that if his political involvement was driven by financial gain, he would be a wealthy individual today.
Furthermore, Okupe clarified his political ideology and background as a liberal democrat. He highlighted his longstanding association with liberal democratic principles, dating back to his involvement with the defunct Liberal Convention Party.
Despite opportunities to align with regional parties in the South West, he chose to join the NPN (National Party of Nigeria), which was perceived to have a significant national presence.
Okupe shared a personal anecdote about his admiration for Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the leader of the opposition party UPN (Unity Party of Nigeria), even though he did not belong to their party or movement. He recounted how his praise for Awolowo’s leadership led to a meeting with the late political figure.
Additionally, Okupe mentioned his amicable relationship with Alhaji Babagana Kingibe, the National Chairman of the SDP (Social Democratic Party), despite their political differences during their time in the NRC (National Republican Convention).
