Labour Party Fires Back At Atiku, Calls ₦50 Million Bribe Claim ‘Irresponsible’

The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his claims that President Bola Tinubu’s government bribed opposition party leaders with ₦50 million each ahead of the 2027 election.

Atiku had accused the ruling party of distributing ₦50 million to opposition figures to gain their support.

In response, the LP, through its National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, stated that the party’s leadership has never received any financial assistance from individuals, groups, organizations, or the government.

Describing Atiku’s claims as reckless and demeaning, the LP called the statement a letdown coming from such an experienced politician. The party also demanded that Atiku provide proof to back up his accusations, warning that without evidence, his words would be dismissed as unsubstantiated.

The statement reads: “We are astonished that a seasoned politician, who has contested elections for most of his life, would make such a wild and baseless accusation.

“As the Labour Party, we have always remained the strongest opposition, truthfully challenging the government. We led the most impactful campaign in the 2023 general elections, and have stayed true to our principles. Atiku’s remarks are reckless and dishonorable, and a disservice to his position.

“We want to make it clear that the LP has managed its finances prudently, relying solely on internally generated funds, without support from any elected officials. Despite challenges, the leadership has remained committed to the party’s values.

“Our leadership has not received any outside salary. Salaries are public knowledge, and can be easily verified. We urge Atiku to be cautious in making sweeping statements. He should focus on his own party and speak only for himself.

“The opposition plays a critical role in any thriving democracy by holding the government accountable and ensuring inclusivity. Democracy cannot survive without opposition, and maintaining a robust opposition requires significant sacrifice.”
