The Supreme Court, in its ruling on Friday, dismissed an Appeal Court judgment that had recognized Julius Abure as the national chairman of the Labour Party. The apex court also rejected Abure’s cross-appeal as unmeritorious and upheld Nenadi Usman’s appeal regarding the leadership dispute.
Speaking to the press after the judgment, Senator Nwokocha described the ruling as a positive and encouraging development. He expressed gratitude to the party’s stakeholders who supported the Caretaker Committee in the journey to the Supreme Court.
“I am thrilled by this landmark decision; it is a well-deserved and encouraging result. It shows the importance of resorting to the court whenever such issues arise,” Nwokocha said.
He added, “I am happy to declare that the Labour Party has come to stay. It is a people’s party—one that everyone believes in. I want to thank our members and congratulate all those in the National Caretaker Committee, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, as well as the entire leadership of our NWC and NEC, including TUC and NLC members, Governor Alex Otti, Deputy Governor, and all the party’s dedicated members and supporters who believe in democracy.”
Nwokocha emphasized the significance of the ruling, calling it a reinforcement of democracy in Nigeria. “This ruling strengthens belief in the democratic system of Nigeria,” he said.
He then urged party supporters to remain steadfast and continue working towards the party’s success. “The party members have shown remarkable patience despite the challenges. I encourage them to remain patient as we continue to build the party. Now, more than ever, we need all hands on deck.”
