Labour Urges Governors To Prepare For Minimum Wage Backlog Payments

Comrade Osifo issued this call during a meeting with executive members of the Kogi State government, led by former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Onu Edoka, at the TUC headquarters in Abuja.

Responding to remarks by Comrade Edoka that Kogi State currently adheres to the N30,000 minimum wage, Osifo emphasized the importance of preparing for the implementation of the new minimum wage when it is enacted.

“On the issue of the minimum wage, we are looking ahead to the enactment of the new minimum wage act by the end of July or early August, subject to legislative and presidential approval,” Osifo stated. “Our goal, jointly with labour organizations, is to secure the passage and presidential assent to the new minimum wage by then. This will significantly alleviate the challenges faced by workers amid the current economic hardships and high inflation in the country.”

He further appealed to Kogi State officials to prioritize budgetary provisions for the new minimum wage amid revenue constraints. Osifo commended states like Nasarawa for setting aside funds to meet these new obligations.

Addressing the broader impact, Osifo highlighted the economic benefits of timely salary payments, underscoring that prompt payment enhances workers’ purchasing power and supports local industries.

“I also urge all states to prepare for the implementation of the new minimum wage,” Osifo added. “Labour is fully prepared to ensure compliance nationwide once the new law is enacted.”

Earlier in his remarks, Edoka affirmed that the Kogi State government, under Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, has cleared all outstanding salaries and pensions owed to state workers and pensioners. He emphasized the administration’s commitment to prioritizing workers’ welfare and implementing various initiatives to enhance their conditions.

“The Governor has undertaken several labour-friendly initiatives, including the prompt payment of salaries by the 24th of each month and full payment of pensions at both state and local government levels,” Edoka noted. He also cited other measures such as hazard allowances for health workers, a health insurance scheme, and improved salaries for local government employees.
