The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of eroding the neutrality of key state institutions by allegedly drawing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigeria Police Force into partisan activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The opposition party raised concerns over reports that INEC had engaged a faction of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) for election logistics and the reported attendance of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the launch of the pro-Tinubu City Boy Movement.

In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the developments risk undermining public confidence in the credibility and independence of Nigeria’s electoral and security institutions.

According to the party, the alleged involvement of an NURTW faction linked to a political ally of President Tinubu in handling election logistics could cast doubt on the integrity of the electoral process.

“The credibility of any election depends not only on transparency but also on the perception that every institution involved is impartial. Any arrangement that raises questions about neutrality could weaken public trust in the process,” the statement said.

The ADC also referenced President Tinubu’s recent comment that “all is fair in war,” arguing that it had heightened concerns about the conduct of the 2027 elections.

The party further criticised the reported presence of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police at the inauguration of the City Boy Movement, insisting that senior police officers must avoid political activities that could create the impression of bias.

“The Nigeria Police Force belongs to all Nigerians, not to any political party. Senior police officers must not only remain neutral but must also be seen to be neutral,” the statement added.

Abdullahi disclosed that the ADC would formally write to the Chairman of INEC, seeking clarification over the reported engagement of the NURTW faction for election logistics.

The party also said it would request an explanation from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) on whether the Lagos police commissioner attended the political event with official approval.

According to the ADC, if the commissioner acted without authorisation, appropriate disciplinary measures should follow. Otherwise, it argued that the same privilege should be extended to opposition parties.

The party added that it would invite the IGP and the Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to its forthcoming political event in Abuja as a test of whether security agencies would extend equal treatment to both the ruling party and the opposition.
