Lagos Ensures Effective Cholera Control Measures In Educational Institutions

Lagos State Government has pledged to implement Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures in schools to curb the spread of communicable diseases, particularly in light of recent cholera outbreaks in some local government areas. Mr. Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, affirmed this commitment in a statement issued in Lagos. He emphasized the importance of schools promptly reporting suspected cholera cases or other health emergencies to designated hotlines (08023169485, 08137412348, and 767/112).

As schools in Lagos resume after the midterm and Sallah break, Alli-Balogun urged strict adherence to precautionary measures. These include regular handwashing, cleaning and disinfection, health screenings, daily health assessments, and maintaining physical distancing. Vaccination updates and a balanced diet to boost immune systems were also encouraged.

The commissioner stressed the need for stringent hygiene practices among food handlers to prevent disease transmission, ensuring availability of oral rehydration salts in school clinics for managing dehydration cases. He underscored the importance of functional WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities in key school areas to maintain health standards.

Alli-Balogun concluded by advising students to prioritize safety and vigilance, underscoring collective efforts to maintain a secure and healthy learning environment for all.
