Lawal highlighted that boarding students represent over 1% of the total student population in Lagos’s public schools. He explained that the current boarding fee of ₦35,000, set in 2021, is no longer feasible for 2024.
The Lagos State Government has approved an increase in boarding fees for all public secondary schools, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session. The new fee is set at ₦100,000 and will apply starting September 15, 2024.
Lawal acknowledged that some parents may disagree with the fee increase, but emphasized that the decision, though difficult, prioritizes the well-being of the students. He noted that enrolling a child in a boarding school is a personal choice, and parents are expected to cover the boarding fees.
