The Lagos State Police Command successfully rescued two toddlers who were found locked up in an apartment on Adelakun Street, located in the Iju Ishaga area of Lagos State.
The mother of these infants has been struggling with substance abuse, leading her to neglect her parental duties.
Alerted by concerned neighbors, the Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network conducted a rescue mission. Upon gaining entry into the residence, they discovered the toddlers in a state of neglect, left to fend for themselves.
Tragically, these children were confined to a room for extended periods, where they ate, slept, and handled their basic needs.
Ebenezer Omejalile, the Chief Operating Officer of the Advocate for Children and Vulnerable Persons Network, revealed that local residents brought the situation to their attention. He highlighted that this wasn’t the first instance, as the police had previously rescued the toddlers from a similar predicament.
The rescue operation, spearheaded by the former Divisional Police Officer, saw the children being temporarily placed under government care. However, shockingly, they were later returned to their mother’s custody, despite the initial intervention.
Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the successful rescue, ensuring that the children are now in a safe environment.
This distressing incident follows a recent case where the police arrested Fatimo Ganiyu, a grandmother, for allegedly confining her three underage grandchildren in her home in the Ikotun area of the state.
