The application aimed to ensure public safety and prevent potential damage to lives and property during the protests. Justice Ogundare’s order confines all demonstrations to these two parks, barring any activities elsewhere in Lagos.

The application listed several parties, including Adamma Ukpabi and Tosin Harsogba from Active Citizens Group, Comrade Juwon Sanyaolu and Hassan Soweto from Take It Back Movement, among others, as co-defendants.

Pedro argued that, given the various groups planning to participate in the protest, both in support and opposition, it was crucial to safeguard infrastructure and avoid a repeat of the 2020 EndSARS protests, which led to significant loss and damage.

He highlighted that the Lagos police force is insufficiently staffed to secure all local government areas and public spaces. Pedro expressed concerns that the protest could be exploited by criminals disrupting public order.

The court’s decision was made to balance the right to protest with the need to prevent unlawful destruction. Pedro emphasized the importance of allowing citizens to express their grievances without compromising public safety.

Justice Ogundare granted the requested orders, specifying that protests are allowed only at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park and Peace Park from 8 AM to 6 PM between August 1 and 10. The ruling also directs the Lagos State Police to ensure security and manage traffic at these locations during the specified times.

Additionally, the court ordered that all relevant documents and court orders be published in a national daily to ensure proper notification to all parties involved.
