The Governor addressed the arson of the state House of Assembly complex, the divisions among lawmakers, and the consequent tumultuous events that ensued in the state.
Fubara also expressed gratitude for the intervention of President Bola Tinubu in resolving the discord between himself and his predecessor, as well as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
He further assured that peace would undoubtedly triumph, and he pledged to continue working towards the security and progress of the state.
In his statement, Fubara conveyed, “My fellow citizens of Rivers State, I find it necessary to issue this press release regarding the recent developments in our beloved state.
“On the late evening of Sunday, October 29, 2023, I received reports of a fire that had consumed the revered chambers of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The fire was extinguished by the fire service, and security forces took control of the situation.
“Upon my visit to the assembly complex on Monday, October 30, 2023, I assessed the extent of the damage and implemented measures to safeguard lives and property within the assembly complex. I urged the security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and provide me with a report.
“Subsequently, I received reports of a split in the state House of Assembly: one faction claiming to have impeached and suspended the House Leader and three others, with intentions to proceed with impeachment proceedings against me. The rival faction, on the other hand, impeached the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, igniting a form of political crisis.
“I extend my appreciation to the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, for his wise intervention, which initiated a series of dialogues to facilitate the timely resolution of the brewing crises. I also thank our esteemed elders who are currently mediating in the matter.
“I want to emphasize that my actions are centered on restoring peace and stability in our state. As a man of peace and as the Governor, the progress of our state remains my utmost priority.
“Therefore, I am committed to making any necessary sacrifices to achieve this objective. Additionally, as leaders, it is our shared responsibility, myself, the immediate past Governor, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to leverage our positions and influences both within and outside the state to advance the progress, security, and well-being of our people.
“Consequently, we must not allow circumstances that could hinder our efforts toward the advancement of our people to prevail.
“We are continually prepared and willing to pursue the path to enduring peace and tranquillity, with a strong commitment to actualizing all initiatives and efforts by the President and other well-intentioned Nigerians, including my fellow governors and the elders.
