In a statement, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, criticized the timing of the suspension, which came just before International Women’s Day, arguing that it sent a negative message about women’s participation in governance.

While acknowledging that the suspension was linked to alleged breaches of Senate rules, Ifoh emphasized that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio had not been properly investigated.

He further asserted that the Senate’s actions were unlawful, highlighting that Akpoti-Uduaghan was denied a fair hearing and that a court ruling barring the suspension was disregarded. Ifoh denounced the move as a clear abuse of power and a violation of the senator’s rights.

Additionally, Ifoh expressed concern over the disenfranchisement of Kogi Central constituents, who will lack representation in the Senate for six months. He condemned the suspension as an assault on democracy and urged the Senate to reverse its decision to allow due process to take its course.

The Labour Party has demanded an immediate lifting of the suspension and a thorough investigation into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations, calling for adherence to democratic principles.
