The current dynamics of the Nigerian rice market are characterized by fluctuating trends, particularly in the pricing of 50kg bags, which have been steadily increasing since last month.

Locally produced Nigerian rice stands out as a more cost-effective choice compared to imported varieties, offering consumers various packaging sizes to suit their preferences.

Rice in Nigeria is available in diverse package sizes, ranging from 50kg to 5kg bags, catering to different segments of the market. A standard 50kg bag contains approximately 13 custard paint rubber buckets, each weighing around 4kg, translating to 33 mudu or 54 derica, providing consumers with flexibility in their purchases.

As of March 20, 2024, imported rice commands an average price of N60,000 for a 50kg bag and N40,000 for a 25kg half-bag. Conversely, Nigerian rice is priced at N70,000 for a 50kg bag and N35,000 for a 25kg bag, reflecting the premium associated with locally sourced grains. Moreover, the cost of a single derica of rice stands at N1,800, while a paint bucket fetches approximately N7,500.

The Nigerian rice market boasts a plethora of brands competing for consumer preference, including My Food, Mama Gold, My Choice, Royal Stallion, Cap Rice, Uncle Ben’s Rice, and Mama’s Pride, offering varying quality levels and price points.

The fluctuating nature of the Nigerian rice market is influenced by several factors, with significant contributions from the top rice-producing states in the country. These factors include production volume, transportation costs, market demand, importation dynamics, and government policies aimed at supporting local production and stabilizing prices.

Leading rice-producing states in Nigeria include Kebbi, Ebonyi, Benue, and Anambra, each making substantial contributions to the national rice supply through government and private sector initiatives aimed at enhancing production and promoting economic growth.
