Law Enforcement: FPRO Reports 29,000 Arrests For Kidnapping And Related Crimes In Past Year

The Nigeria Police Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has revealed that a staggering number of 29,000 suspects were apprehended for various crimes such as kidnapping, rape, murder, gun-running, and cultism, among others, spanning across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory within the span of one year.

In a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Thursday, Adejobi emphasized that these arrests were pivotal components of the police’s concerted efforts to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians.

Breaking down the statistics, Adejobi, who serves as an Assistant Commissioner of Police, outlined that among the arrests were 4,826 individuals nabbed for armed robbery, 3,078 for kidnapping, and 2,479 for sexual offenses. Additionally, 1,243 suspects were apprehended for unlawful possession of firearms, 3,523 for involvement in cultism, 3,381 for murder or homicide, and a substantial 13,402 for various other offenses.

Highlighting the proactive measures taken, Adejobi noted that beyond the arrests, over 1,750 kidnap victims were successfully rescued in multiple operations, while significant quantities of illegal items, including 2,566 firearms, 19,510 rounds of ammunition, and 1,475 vehicles/motorcycles, were recovered nationwide.

Providing an update on the judicial proceedings, Adejobi stated that the force had actively pursued legal action, successfully prosecuting 29,152 criminal cases throughout the country within the year under review. Of these cases, 17,679 have been conclusively adjudicated, while 11,576 are currently undergoing trial. Additionally, 51 cases are presently under appeal at various appellate courts, with 16,200 convictions secured, resulting in offenders serving diverse forms of punishment for their criminal deeds
