Abdul Ningi, the representative of Bauchi Central senatorial district, has disclosed the value of the allowance provided to lawmakers during the recess period. He revealed that certain legislators received a sum of N2 million as a recess allowance, although he clarified that he personally has not received his share of the allowance.

In a recent video, Senate President Godswill Akpabio was heard informing the Senator about the allocation of a ‘token’ to them in order to enjoy their recess.

Akpabio’s statement, which he later withdrew, stirred a significant amount of controversy online.

Speaking with Channels TV, he expressed, “Nothing has been credited to my account yet. I’ve heard that some individuals received N2 million, but I haven’t received anything as of now. Hopefully, I will receive it when the necessary arrangements are made.”

He criticized Senator Akpabio’s remarks, deeming them unconventional. The PDP leader also added, “In cases like these, the communication should not be broadcasted in the manner he did.

t presents a substantial embarrassment not only to the Senate President personally but also to the integrity of the National Assembly.

The Senate President should have gone a step further to elucidate the purpose of these allowances. How were the allowances determined? Who authorized the allocation? Is it part of the standard remuneration?”

Senator Ningi noted that the general sentiment among Nigerians is disapproval of Akpabio’s statement, an opinion he shares as well. He expressed uncertainty about the practicality of N2 million for a holiday and questioned the rationale behind the allocation.

In his view, when the senators resume their duties, there needs to be a clear understanding of the intended purpose of this financial allocation, especially since lawmakers typically do not receive a recess allowance.
