Arewa leader in the South, Alhaji Musa Saidu, strongly disapproves of the recent verbal assault on former Nigerian military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, retired, following his comments during a visit to President Bola Tinubu at the presidential villa. Saidu expressed his dismay at the manner in which certain individuals on social media have chosen to hurl insults at Dr. Gowon, deeming it absurd. He urged leaders from the eastern region to intervene and discourage such behavior among their constituents.
Despite the initial media attack by factions of Ohaneze and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), calling for Gowon to apologize for his role in the civil war, Saidu emphasized the need for an immediate halt to such actions. The Arewa leader highlighted that some Igbos were allegedly exacerbating tensions by subjecting Gowon to a barrage of insults. Saidu, whose father was a soldier in the Nigerian civil war, clarified that Gowon did not initiate hostilities against the Nigerian state; rather, he acted to preserve the nation’s unity during his tenure as Head of State.
Expressing concern over the escalating nature of the attacks, Saidu remarked that even platforms like TikTok have become arenas for insulting Gowon, with individuals going to extremes, such as a half-naked girl participating in the condemnation. He called for an end to such disrespectful behavior, emphasizing that it has reached an intolerable level.
Saidu questioned the motive behind attacking Gowon for expressing his views, urging everyone to shift their focus towards the collective effort of nation-building. Additionally, he praised the group BRAC Coastal Aborigines in the South-South, led by Doris McDaniels, for speaking out against the media-driven assaults on General Gowon.
