Trump made the remark during a White House news conference on Friday, July 24, just hours after James announced he would continue his NBA career with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Asked whether he considered Michael Jordan or LeBron James the greatest basketball player of all time, Trump threw his support behind Jordan, whom he described as a close friend.

“Michael Jordan is a guy that’s a friend of mine. I play golf with him. He’s a really good guy,” Trump said.

“I think LeBron is, maybe he’s a racist, but maybe he doesn’t like Trump. I don’t know. I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way.”

As of the time of filing this report, James had not publicly responded to Trump’s comments.

The exchange is the latest chapter in a years-long public rivalry between the two. James has been an outspoken critic of Trump and publicly endorsed Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during their campaigns.

Their feud dates back to 2017, when James called Trump “a bum” following a disagreement over White House invitations for NBA championship-winning teams.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history, the 41-year-old James has won four NBA championships with the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Lakers. He is also a four-time NBA Most Valuable Player and holds the NBA records for the most career points and games played.

Earlier on Friday, James confirmed he would continue his career with the Philadelphia 76ers, joining a roster that includes Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown as the franchise pursues an NBA championship.

“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team,” James said in a social media post announcing the move.
