Legal Consequences For Minors Involved In #EndBadGovernance Protests, Police AlertThe Nigeria Police Force (NPF) announced on Friday that children over the age of seven can face legal charges. This clarification was made by Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, in response to questions about the recent arraignment of minor protesters involved in the #EndBadGovernance movement at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Adejobi explained that under Nigerian law, only children under seven are exempt from criminal liability, emphasizing that all those arraigned are at least 13 years old. He stated, “Those exempt from criminal liability under the law are those below seven. Once you are above seven, you can be charged to court. None of them is younger than seven; the youngest is around 13.”

He clarified that being 13 does not prevent legal charges and noted that the charges were filed under the Children and Young Persons Act. Adejobi described the accused as individuals who engaged in violent behavior during the protests and displayed foreign flags, actions considered criminal under the law.

Meanwhile, Rimazonte Ezekiel, representing the Federal Government, argued that some of the 76 individuals arraigned are adults, claiming that some are married and had their spouses present in court alongside their parents.

Following the hearing, Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to the 76 protesters, setting the bail at N10 million per person, totaling N760 million. The bail conditions require two sureties for each defendant: one must be a Level 15 civil servant, and the other must be a parent. The sureties must provide appointment and promotion letters, identification, verified addresses, passport photos, and surrender their international passports along with an affidavit of means.

Justice Egwuatu stated, “The defendants are granted bail in the sum of N10 million each, with two sureties in like sum. One must be a Level 15 civil servant, and the other a parent of the defendant.
