Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has responded to the recent United States report concerning the Biafra agitator. Ejimakor has called upon the Nigerian government to acknowledge its mistakes in Kanu’s trial and promptly conclude the prosecution process.

The US “2023 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices: Nigeria” highlighted that Nigerian security forces violated Kanu’s rights during his arrest and extradition, describing his detention as arbitrary.

In his reaction to the report, Ejimakor commended the US for officially recognizing the illegality of Kanu’s rendition. He expressed gratitude to the US government and its mission in Nigeria for their diplomatic courage.

Ejimakor emphasized two significant aspects of the US acknowledgment. Firstly, it supports their long-standing argument that Kanu’s rendition was unlawful, not lawful extradition, which holds distinct legal implications. Secondly, he expects Nigeria, prompted by the US stance, to acknowledge its violation of Kanu’s human rights and swiftly conclude the prosecution, thus ending any further temptations of impunity.

He reasoned that Kanu’s prolonged prosecution, initiated nearly a decade ago for offenses that have lost relevance, has become questionable. Additionally, considering the complexities surrounding Kanu’s detention location, it’s increasingly doubtful he’ll receive a fair trial.

Ejimakor urged the Nigerian government to act sensibly by closing Kanu’s prosecution, as further delay only exacerbates the contentious situation.
