In a statement released on Sunday, SERAP called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas to refer the matter to anti-corruption agencies for thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone found guilty.
The group also urged the National Assembly leadership to publicly name those involved in the alleged bribery and recover any illicit proceeds.
SERAP further demanded protection for Ibrahim Auro, a House of Representatives member from Jigawa (APC), who first exposed the allegations.
In an open letter dated August 16, 2025, signed by Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare, SERAP described the allegations as a “serious breach of public trust and constitutional oath of office,” stressing that bribery must never influence legislative duties.
The organisation warned that the claims undermine Nigerians’ democratic rights, stating: “The allegations that lawmakers are paying up to ₦3 million to table motions and bills make a mockery of legislative powers under Section 4 of the Nigerian Constitution (1999, as amended).”
SERAP gave the National Assembly a seven-day ultimatum to act, threatening legal action if its demands are ignored.
It added that referring the case to the EFCC and ICPC would help restore public confidence in the legislature’s commitment to accountability and the protection of democratic processes.
