Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, announced at the Charity Champions Gala Night in Abuja that the National Eye Centre Act (Amendment) Bill, recently introduced in parliament, aims to enhance access to eye care across Nigeria. Kalu expressed concern over reports indicating that approximately 24 million Nigerians are facing challenges related to vision impairment.
During his address, Kalu highlighted his personal commitment to addressing this issue, noting that the Benjamin Kalu Foundation had provided eye treatment to over 4,000 constituents in the past year alone. He emphasized the importance of collective efforts in supporting underserved communities, praising the event’s focus on raising awareness and resources for essential eye care services.
Kalu also acknowledged the contributions of other public figures, including ex-Super Eagles players like Austin Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo, for their dedication to humanitarian causes. He underscored the need for continued support and legislative action to tackle the crisis of sight loss in Nigeria effectively.
