Boniface completed the temporary switch last summer after an injury-hit campaign, with Leverkusen prioritising his recovery and long-term physical condition.

Rolfes noted that both the club and the player agreed that a change of environment and more regular training sessions would help him return to full sharpness.

“He was key in the championship season. He was unbelievable in his performance, and in his second season, he had a little bit of a problem with injuries and also last summer,” Rolfes told Oma Sports.

“We spoke together. We said he needs more training to get in his best shape again. And if you’re playing every three days it’s difficult because the reality is that you’re not training anymore with a team.”

He also revealed that Boniface experienced a setback during his time in Bremen, requiring knee surgery due to complications. However, Rolfes confirmed that the procedure was successful and the striker is now recovering well.

“It turned out he had some problems with his knee unfortunately, needed surgery which went really well, and now he’s on his way to getting his fitness. His knee is much better. It’s a good situation, and now he has to build up his fitness again,” he added.
