LP Appeals To Supreme Court To Annul Imo Guber Election Citing Over-Voting Claims

Ifoh stressed the urgency of addressing governance issues in Imo State, stating that the LP and its candidate, Senator Athan Achonu, face a crucial opportunity at the Supreme Court to rectify the injustices endured by voters who have been subjected to an unrepresentative government.

He noted that Imo State had previously been affected by a controversial decision in 2020 that significantly altered its political landscape, despite evidence of over-voting that should have nullified the election results.

Ifoh argued that the 2023 election was similarly tainted by over-voting and other irregularities, which were disregarded by both the election tribunal and the appeal court.

He expressed concern that allowing such irregularities to persist could establish a harmful precedent, effectively making them an unofficial norm in Imo State’s electoral process.

Ifoh called on the Supreme Court to address this miscarriage of justice, emphasizing that Imo State’s future development hinges on upholding the rule of law and maintaining public trust in the judiciary. A fair resolution, he argued, would restore faith in democracy and facilitate genuine progress in the state.

He also criticized the Buhari administration for failing to maintain electoral integrity, pointing out discrepancies between voter numbers and the total votes counted, which exceeded the certified number of accredited voters.

The LP presented evidence of electoral malpractice, including result falsification, harassment of party agents, and vote-buying, but these issues were not properly addressed by the courts.

Ifoh further condemned the difficulties faced by petitioners in accessing critical evidence, such as the BVAS (Bimodal Voter Accreditation System) devices. Limited access to only 30 out of over 4,000 requested BVAS units hindered their ability to build a comprehensive case.

Concluding, Ifoh described the past four and a half years under Governor Hope Uzodinma’s administration as disastrous, marked by worsening socio-economic crises, increased criminality, and deteriorating infrastructure. He urged the Supreme Court to cancel the flawed election and mandate a new governorship election in Imo State to restore public trust and uphold judicial integrity.
