Addressing a press conference in Benin City on Tuesday, the chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Rt. Hon. (Mrs) Elizabeth Ativie, dismissed calls for the removal of the national chairman, Julius Abure, claiming they were sponsored and lacked the authority to do so.
She stated, “The National Chairman has achieved significant successes during his tenure. His successes outweigh his failures. We are aware that some parties uncomfortable with the Labour Party’s popularity are behind the troubles in LP. The National Chairman can only be removed by a National Convention, as per the LP constitution.”
Ativie refuted claims of an Esan agenda, stating, “Some say I have come to push an Esan agenda, but as someone from Uhunmwonde, I cannot push an Esan agenda. I aim to produce a governor, not pursue a regional agenda.”
She condemned the recent invasion of the Labour Party Secretariat in Abuja, saying, “The invaders were sponsored to undermine the party. They were hired from a nearby market in Abuja. Julius Abure, the National Chairman, has elevated the party to new heights. Under his leadership, we now have a governor, as well as national and state Assembly members. Such achievements deserve commendation.”
Ativie urged those trying to divide the party to reconsider and work towards the party’s progress.
Addressing the claim by Kelly Ogbaloi that he remains the state chairman, she explained, “The tenure of that executive has expired, having exceeded the six-year limit. After the primary, the executive failed to unify the party, leading to the formation of this caretaker committee. Without this change, we could not have effectively worked towards winning the election. Their tenure has ended
