Luke Shaw Faces Uncertain Man United Future As Potential Replacement Emerges

Manchester United are reportedly considering offering Luke Shaw only a short-term contract extension as the club plans for a potential change at left-back.

According to Bush Radio Academy, reports indicate that United are open to extending Shaw’s stay beyond his current contract but are not presently planning a long-term renewal. TEAMtalk reports that the England international could leave Old Trafford when his existing agreement expires in the summer of 2027 if a new deal is not reached.

Shaw, who joined Manchester United in 2014, has remained an important figure at the club despite a career that has been affected by recurring fitness problems. He enjoyed a more consistent 2025/26 campaign, starting all 38 Premier League matches for the first time in his career, but his recent injury concerns have reportedly influenced the club’s succession planning.

United did not sign a new specialist left-back during the summer transfer window, leaving Shaw as the club’s primary senior option in the position. His absence from some matches this season has again highlighted the need for greater depth on the left side of the defence.

The club is now reportedly looking at the January transfer window as an opportunity to strengthen the position, with Crystal Palace defender Tyrick Mitchell among the players being considered.

Mitchell, 27, is approaching the final months of his contract at Selhurst Park and could become available for a reduced fee in January if he does not agree a new deal with Palace. Reports have identified him as a potential target as United look for a younger and more durable option at left-back.

There have also been reports that Mitchell would be open to a move to Old Trafford. TEAMtalk reported that the England international could find it difficult to reject a January approach from United should the club make an offer.

United had previously explored a move for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as a potential successor to Shaw, but a deal did not materialise during the summer window. Reports now suggest that the club could revisit the position in January as part of its longer-term squad planning.

For Shaw, the situation leaves his future at Manchester United uncertain. While the club is reportedly willing to consider a limited extension, the current indications from transfer reports suggest that United are also preparing for the possibility of his departure and are assessing alternatives for the left-back position.
